Glamaig — Red Cuillin Summit Trailhead and Sligachan Staging

Trailhead

Glamaig sits directly across the A87 from the Sligachan Hotel, one of Scotland’s most storied mountain pubs. The trailhead is essentially the hotel car park — park up, walk out the door, and you’re on the hill. The ascent is relentless scree on the south face, gaining nearly 2,500 feet in under two miles. No technical scrambling required, but it’ll test your lungs hard. Summit views take in the Black Cuillin ridge, Loch Sligachan, and on clear days, the Outer Hebrides. The car park handles a fair number of rigs and there’s food, whisky, and a bunkhouse at the hotel when you come back down broken.

The A87 approach from either Kyle of Lochalsh or Portree is paved and easy for any vehicle. Busy in July and August — arrive early or late to grab a decent spot. No formal overnight camping at the trailhead; wild camping in the glen below is practiced under Scotland’s Land Reform Act but keep a clean camp.
