Sandoy Interior Plateau Track — Sandur to Skálavík via Sandoy Upland

Gentle island, brutal interior plateau.

Moderate

Sandoy — the ‘Sand Island’ — looks deceptively gentle from the ferry coming out of Skopun, but the interior track crossing its central plateau from Sandur eastward to Skálavík tells a different story. The route climbs out of Sandur through farmland that transitions quickly into open moorland, skirting the shores of Sandsvatn lake before descending a rough switchback track into the small valley holding Skálavík. The lake itself sits at around 90 metres but feels fully exposed, and the moorland crossing has the kind of deep wet ruts that will bury a poorly chosen vehicle to the axles. Skálavík has a small harbour and a handful of houses — it’s as quiet as the Faroes get.

The track is rated for high-clearance vehicles with 4WD engaged — a stock SUV on road tyres will likely get stuck on the boggy plateau sections after any rain, which in the Faroes means basically always. Distance is short but the surface slows progress considerably. There’s no fuel on Sandoy outside Skopun, near the ferry terminal; plan accordingly. The ferry from Gamlarætt near Tórshavn to Skopun is the entry point. Late May through September is your window; winter conditions make the plateau track genuinely dangerous. Carry a shovel and recovery boards as standard kit here.
