Sørvágsvatn — Leitisvatn Lake Cliff Overlook
Sørvágsvatn, also called Leitisvatn, is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands and sits on the island of Vágar. The famous cliff-edge viewpoint creates the wild visual trick of the lake hovering above the Atlantic — it’s real, it’s documented everywhere, and it still shocks you in person. The hike out to the promontory takes about 40 minutes each way from the trailhead near the village of Sørvágur. Wind is relentless up here; bring a shell no matter the season.
Access is managed — there’s a small fee charged by the landowner to cross private grazing land, and you may need to wait at a gate. No formal parking lot, just a gravel pullout near Sørvágur. The trail is well-worn but unguarded at the cliff edge. Don’t push your luck on wet grass. Best light is late afternoon in summer when the low sun catches the lake surface.
A lake that floats above the sea.
