Clypse and Kerrowdhoo Reservoir Track — Onchan to Baldrine via Central Manx Upland
Victorian reservoirs, Manx moorland, zero crowds.
Built to service the Clypse and Kerrowdhoo reservoirs constructed in the 1890s to supply Douglas with water, this farm-and-maintenance track runs east from the outskirts of Onchan across open moorland before looping around both reservoir margins and dropping toward Baldrine. The surface is a mix of compacted gravel and rough grass-centred double-track, with one gate crossing near the Clypse dam wall that requires a get-out. In wet conditions the northern approach above Kerrowdhoo deteriorates into soft peat ruts — nothing catastrophic, but enough to punish street tyres and keep the curious in their lane cars at home. Views across Douglas Bay and east toward the Manx coastline open up between the two reservoir basins and are about as good as it gets on a clear Manx morning.
This is a moderate high-clearance run, not a technical trail — a stock 4WD or even a capable all-wheel-drive with decent ground clearance handles it in dry conditions. Soft-roaders and lifted crossovers do fine in summer; come October the peat softens and you want a proper 4×4. No permit required, but stay on the defined track — this is active water-catchment land managed by Manx Utilities. Best May through September. Fuel in Douglas, five minutes away. Cell service is decent on the ridge. A half-day out and back or loop, perfect before catching the TT on a quieter week.
