Snaefell Mountain Road — Bungalow to Summit via Electric Railway Parallel Track
Top of Mann — all four kingdoms in one view.
Snaefell is the highest point on the Isle of Man at 2,034 feet, and the track running from the Bungalow — the famous TT course crossing on the Mountain Mile — up to the summit radio station is one of the most exposed and recognizable drives on the island. The track parallels the 1895 Snaefell Mountain Railway for much of its length and is used for maintenance access. From the Bungalow on the A18, the route pushes northeast along a deteriorating gravel and earth surface, buffeted by wind that can strip paint if you catch it wrong. The final approach to the summit transmitter station delivers views across all four kingdoms — England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales — on a clear day.
This is a moderate-to-difficult track requiring a high-clearance 4WD in wet conditions; in dry summer weather a capable AWD can manage the lower sections but the summit approach is rough. The track is not a public highway and access is subject to land manager permissions — contact Manx Utilities and Manx Telecom before running it. Best attempted June through September. No fuel on the mountain. Cell service is surprisingly decent near the summit tower but patchy on the way up. Short route but not to be underestimated in poor visibility — Manx hill fog arrives fast.
