Slea Head to Clogher Head — Dingle Peninsula Sea Cliff Back Road via Dunquin

Europe's edge, one lane wide and cliff-high.

Moderate

The Slea Head Drive is famous enough, but the gravel spur tracks dropping off it toward Clogher Head and Coumeenoole Beach are where the real experience starts. Running the outer loop from Dún Chaoin (Dunquin) toward Clogher Head along deteriorating narrow lanes and unmarked farm tracks puts you on the edge of Europe in the most literal sense — sheer drops to the Atlantic on your left, stone-walled fields barely wider than your mirrors on the right. The Gallarus Oratory and Dunbeg Fort sit within striking distance and are worth the stop. The track surface alternates between crumbling tarmac, compacted gravel, and bare earth on the steepest coastal sections heading back inland toward Ventry.

This route is manageable in a stock 4WD or even a capable AWD in dry conditions, but the width is the real enemy — passing places are scarce and tourist campers come the other way in summer. Avoid July and August unless you enjoy reversing a quarter mile of cliff road. Spring and October are your windows. Fuel in Dingle town before you leave — there’s nothing useful once you’re past Ventry. No permits, no fees, but respect the farming community whose land the lanes pass through. The views across to the Great Blasket Island are worth every awkward passing maneuver.
