Glen Affric to Kintail — Coulin Forest and Falls of Glomach Back Track

Scotland's wildest glen, no guardrails.

Difficult

Glen Affric is routinely called the most beautiful glen in Scotland, and once you’ve driven the forestry and estate track west from Cannich past Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin toward Alltbeithe, you won’t argue. The route pushes through ancient Caledonian pinewoods before the trees thin out and the track becomes a raw estate road across open deer forest. The Falls of Glomach approach off the Kintail side adds another dimension — one of Britain’s highest waterfalls sits invisible in a gorge until you’re nearly on top of it. The full through-route linking Affric to Morvich near Kintail is a genuine commitment, not a day loop.

This is a high-clearance 4WD route — not extreme, but absolutely not suitable for anything without decent ground clearance and low-range capability. The track surface degrades significantly in the upper glen and can be deeply rutted in wet seasons. Spring snowmelt turns crossings treacherous; late summer and early autumn are the practical window. No permits required for vehicle travel on estate tracks but check with Forestry and Land Scotland for any seasonal closures around stalking. Fuel and supplies in Cannich or Shiel Bridge. Cell coverage is essentially zero beyond the first few miles. This is the kind of drive you’ll talk about for years.
