Slieve Bloom Mountain Road — Kinnitty to Mountrath via the Wolftrap Summit Track
Ireland's forgotten ridge — bog, grouse, and silence.
The Slieve Bloom Mountains rise out of the Irish Midlands like an afterthought — low by Alpine standards but wild enough that most of the interior sees more red grouse than people. The route out of Kinnitty climbs the forestry road past Cadamstown and onto the open ridge track above the Wolftrap Valley, topping out near the county boundary between Offaly and Laois before the descent drops you toward Mountrath through regenerating bog and commercial plantation. The Wolftrap track itself is the crux: a narrow, boggy forestry road with soft verges that will swallow a wheel if you stray off the crown, and a couple of stream crossings that run high after rain. This is Coillte-managed forestry for the most part, with open access under Irish forestry recreation policy.
A stock 4WD with decent clearance handles the Slieve Bloom in summer without drama, but after autumn rain this becomes a genuine test of traction — mud-terrain tyres and a set of traction boards are worth carrying. There are no facilities in the interior; fuel and supplies in Kinnitty or Mountrath before you commit. Best window is June through August when the tracks firm up. No permit needed. The reward is a midland Ireland completely off the tourist radar — bog cotton, curlew calls, and a 360-degree view from the ridge that stretches to the Shannon and the Wicklow hills on a clear day.
