Lecht Summit Road

Scotland's highest road — exposed, raw, relentless.

Moderate

The A939 over the Lecht is notorious among Scottish drivers for good reason — it’s one of the first roads in Britain to close when winter bites, and in summer it opens up a raw, treeless moorland traverse at nearly 2,100 feet above sea level. Starting from Tomintoul, Scotland’s highest village, you climb steadily southeast through open heather country before cresting the Lecht at the ski area, then descend sharply toward Cock Bridge and the Corgarff Castle ruin standing alone in the Don Valley below. The road itself is tarmac but the exposure, bog edges, and sudden weather shifts make this feel like proper highland territory — and the surrounding forestry and estate tracks invite you well off the main line.

In summer this is a scenic drive accessible to any vehicle, but in shoulder seasons the surrounding Lecht estate tracks and access roads into the Cairngorm foothills demand high clearance and a working diff lock. Snow can fall any month at elevation here. No permit required for the main road, but estate tracks require landowner contact — check with Tomintoul and Glenlivet Discovery Centre for current access. Fuel up in Tomintoul. Cell service is patchy to nonexistent on the high moor. This one rewards the driver who leaves the tarmac and pushes into the surrounding terrain.
