Conor Pass Road — Dingle Peninsula Summit Road via Brandon Bay Overlook
Ireland's highest driveable pass. Atlantic on both sides.
Conor Pass — An Chonair in Irish — is the highest mountain pass in Ireland accessible by vehicle, cresting at 456m on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. The road runs roughly north-south, connecting Dingle Town to Cloghane and Brandon Bay on the north coast. The approach from Dingle is the steeper and more dramatic side — the tarmac narrows to a single lane with passing places carved into the rock face, and the drop to Pedlar’s Lake and the valley floor below is sheer and immediate. At the summit viewpoint you get one of Ireland’s great panoramas: Brandon Bay and Brandon Mountain — Ireland’s second-highest peak — to the north, the Blasket Islands and Atlantic to the west. The road traces a line through some of the oldest landscape in Europe.
This is a moderate route in dry conditions but becomes genuinely risky in wet weather or winter ice — the road surface goes greasy fast and the drop-offs are unguarded in places. Caravans and large motorhomes are formally discouraged and practically impossible on the tighter bends. High summer brings tourist traffic; early morning runs in spring or autumn are the way to do it. No permit, no fee. Dingle Town is your fuel and food stop. The broader Dingle Peninsula back roads — Slea Head Drive, the Blasket Island ferry road — pair perfectly with this pass for a full peninsula circuit. Cell service is patchy near the summit.
