Transfăgărășan Highway — Curtea de Argeș to Sibiu via the Fagaras Crest

Nicolae Ceaușescu ordered this road built in just four years after the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia — he wanted a military supply route over the Fagaras Mountains and didn’t much care what it cost. Workers blasted through granite at elevations most Romanian roads never see, and what they left behind is the most spectacular tarmac-and-gravel corridor in the Carpathians. The route climbs out of Curtea de Argeș through dense beech forest, snakes past the Vidraru Reservoir and its 166m arch dam, threads through a 900m-long tunnel just below the 2,042m summit, then drops in hairpin after hairpin toward Sibiu, with Bâlea Lake sitting in its glacial cirque just below the pass. The upper sections above the tunnel close under snow from late October to late June — the gates at each end are not a suggestion.
Most of the road is sealed tarmac but the surface above 1,500m takes serious frost damage and patches of broken asphalt are the norm each season. A stock AWD or 4WD with good ground clearance handles it fine in dry summer conditions — you don’t need lockers, you need patience. July and August see serious tourist traffic, especially on weekends; go mid-week or push through early morning for clear hairpins. Fuel in Curtea de Argeș or Sibiu before heading up — there is nothing on the mountain. Bears are genuinely active in this corridor, so don’t leave food in the vehicle overnight at Bâlea or the lower campgrounds.

Can a stock AWD crossover handle the Transfăgărășan, or do I need a lifted 4x4?
A stock AWD vehicle is sufficient — the road is paved at its highest sections with some gravel stretches lower down, and there are no serious rock obstacles. Ground clearance isn't the limiting factor here; narrow switchbacks and steep grades are. A Subaru Outback or similar handles it fine.
When does the Transfăgărășan close for winter, and when does it reopen?
The high mountain section (roughly between Bâlea Cascadă and the Bâlea Lake tunnel) is typically closed from late October or November through late June or early July, depending on snowpack. CNAIR posts official opening dates, but it shifts year to year — always check before you go. July through October is your safe window.
Are there any permits or tolls required to drive the Transfăgărășan?
No special permits are needed, but Romania requires a road vignette (rovignietă) for all vehicles driving on national roads — buy it online at roviniete.ro or at border crossings before you arrive. There's no additional toll specifically for this road.
What's the hardest section, and what should I actually expect driving it?
The switchbacks climbing from the south toward Bâlea Lake are the most intense — tight hairpin turns, steep exposure, and heavy tourist traffic in peak summer. Nothing technically difficult for a capable driver, but the combination of sheer drop-offs, oncoming vehicles, and pedestrians wandering the road keeps you honest. Take it slow and don't rush the descent.
Is there anywhere to camp along the route, and how far is the nearest fuel stop?
Dispersed camping is possible in the lower valley sections on both the north and south approaches — above the treeline near Bâlea Lake, options are limited and it gets cold fast at 2,000m even in summer. Fuel up in Curtea de Argeș before heading north or in Sibiu if coming from the north; there are no gas stations on the mountain road itself, and the full route is 90km.
