Tinajas Altas Pass Road — Cabeza Prieta Desert Crossing
The Devil's Highway. There's a reason for that name.
The Tinajas Altas Mountains rise out of the western Sonoran Desert like a fortress wall, and the road that skirts their base on the eastern edge of the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most isolated vehicle routes in the continental United States. The Tinajas Altas — “high tanks” in Spanish — are natural rock pools carved into the granite that kept Tohono O’odham travelers and Spanish missionaries alive on the old Devil’s Highway, and dozens of migrants who came before them didn’t make it. You follow that same general corridor on a rough two-track through creosote flats, rocky bajadas, and wind-scoured passes. The route connects from Highway 85 near Lukeville to the area east of Yuma, covering genuine roadless Sonoran desert where you will not see another vehicle for days.
This is an Expert-level desert overland with zero margin for mechanical failure. Two spare tires minimum, 10+ gallons of water per person, a satellite communicator, and a buddy vehicle are non-negotiable. The Cabeza Prieta requires a free permit and a signed hold-harmless agreement due to the active military airspace and extreme conditions — get it from the refuge headquarters in Ajo. Summer temperatures exceed 115°F and are genuinely lethal. Best window is November through February. Active duty military bombing range makes some corridors seasonally restricted. This is serious desert travel, not a weekend joyride.
