Chapada Diamantina Circuit

Tabletop mountains and diamond ghost towns in Bahia

Easy

The Chapada Diamantina Circuit explores Brazil’s answer to the American Southwest — a maze of red sandstone mesas, underground rivers, and colonial mining towns scattered across Bahia’s highlands. This network of dirt roads connects Lençóis to Mucugê, threading between tabletop mountains where 19th-century diamond miners left behind ghost towns and slag heaps. The route passes Cachoeira da Fumaça, Brazil’s second-highest waterfall, and countless swimming holes carved from pink quartzite, with side tracks leading to caves like Gruta da Lapa Doce that stretch for kilometers underground.

Moderate difficulty with mostly good dirt roads that can turn challenging during rainy season (November-March). High-clearance 2WD handles most sections, though 4WD opens up more technical side routes to remote waterfalls and viewpoints. Dry season (April-October) offers the best conditions and clearest swimming holes. Fuel and supplies available in Lençóis and Mucugê, with pousadas and camping throughout the circuit. This is Brazil’s premier adventure playground — where you can rappel into cenotes at sunrise and watch the sunset paint the mesas gold from ancient diamond camps.
