Hart Mountain to Frenchglen — Warner Valley Desert Rim Road

High desert rim, hot springs, and pronghorn country.

Moderate

Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge sits at 8,065 feet above the Warner Basin, and the road that connects it to Frenchglen is one of Oregon’s great overlooked overland runs. Starting from the refuge headquarters — where a natural hot spring tub waits for the end of a dusty day — the route descends through sagebrush-covered fault scarp terrain with direct views down into the Warner Lakes chain below. The Warner Valley’s series of shallow alkali lakes attract migratory birds in the thousands during spring, and pronghorn move freely through the whole corridor. It’s stark, open country with no trees and all sky.

The road is manageable for most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions — gravel and packed dirt with some rocky sections on the initial descent from the refuge. After rain or snow, sections turn to serious mud, and the isolated location means a stuck vehicle is a genuine problem. No permits required. No fee for the hot spring campground — it’s first come, first served and fills fast on weekends. Best run May through October; snow closes the road well into spring some years. Nearest fuel is Burns, 65 miles north. No cell service on the refuge — plan accordingly.
