Sheldon Antelope Range to Hart Lake Rim — Oregon High Desert Northern Circuit

The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge sits in the far northwest corner of Nevada and spills across the Oregon border into some of the most genuinely empty country in the lower 48. This northern circuit runs from Virgin Valley — where the refuge’s opal beds produce gem-quality fire opals from volcanic ash — north through Big Spring to the Oregon border country around Hart Lake Rim. The route crosses open sagebrush steppe, drops through basalt canyon benches, and pushes across playas that crack in summer heat and flood in spring. Pronghorn herds cross the road in waves. You’ll also cut through country that hosted Prohibition-era ranching operations and early-20th-century homestead failures.

This is a remote desert route requiring real navigation skills — BLM maps or a loaded Gaia GPS are non-negotiable. The roads are mostly unimproved two-track; a high-clearance 4WD is required and a full-size truck with recovery gear is smarter. The playa sections become impassable when wet, so late June through October is the window. Carry five gallons of water minimum per person. The nearest fuel is Denio, Nevada — a wide spot with a gas pump that may or may not be operational. Dispersed camping throughout the refuge is legal and free; campfires may be restricted in summer.
