Rubicon Trail — Georgetown to Tahoe City via Eldorado National Forest

The Rubicon is the benchmark. Everything else in California gets measured against it. Starting near Georgetown off the Wentworth Springs Road, the trail climbs into the Eldorado National Forest and immediately starts asking hard questions — Cadillac Hill alone has swallowed bumpers and egos in equal measure. The infamous Rubicon Springs midpoint has been a camp and recovery zone for wheelers since jeep clubs first pioneered the route in the early 1950s. Granite shelves, deep tippy off-camber ledges, and the notorious Buck Island Lake section demand every inch of articulation your rig can offer.

This is an Expert-rated trail and it earns that classification honestly. A highly modified short-wheelbase 4×4 with lockers front and rear, skid plates, at minimum 35-inch tires, and a reliable winch is not optional — it’s the price of admission. Run it with a group; solo attempts are genuinely dangerous. Best window is mid-July through September after snowmelt clears the upper sections. There are no permits required currently, but check with El Dorado National Forest before you go. Water is available at the springs but treat it. What you get out of the Rubicon is simple: bragging rights that are actually earned.
