Tallhill Road — Roblin to Duck Mountain Provincial Forest North Boundary
Boreal clay roads where logging trucks rule.
Roblin sits at the agricultural fringe where Manitoba’s grain fields finally give way to boreal forest, and the network of provincial forestry roads pushing north and east into the Duck Mountain block are some of the most underrated overland corridors in the province. The Tallhill Road system branches off PR 366 northeast of Roblin and cuts through active and historic logging country, skirting unnamed lakes and beaver marsh complexes before pushing to the northern Duck Mountain Provincial Forest boundary. The road surface alternates between packed gravel logging base and raw clay two-track — the clay sections are genuinely treacherous when wet. The Roaring River headwaters cut across the route mid-corridor, providing the biggest obstacle after rain.
This is a remote run requiring fuel planning out of Roblin — carry extra. No services exist once you leave town. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum; locking differentials earn their keep in the clay sections. Best window is mid-July through September after the spring thaw has fully drained. Black bears are thick in this country — keep a clean camp. No formal permit needed for the forestry roads, but confirm with Manitoba Sustainable Development regarding any active logging hauls before committing to the route. What you earn is a genuine Manitoba boreal immersion with no other overlanders in sight.
