Chemin de la Réserve faunique de Dunière — Bas-Saint-Laurent Appalachian Interior Road
Forgotten Appalachian ridge road above the Matapédia.
The Réserve faunique de Dunière sits in a forgotten corner of the Bas-Saint-Laurent, tucked between the Matapédia Valley and the northern fringe of the Chic-Chocs. The forestry road network here connects logging access spurs across rolling Appalachian terrain — hardwood and balsam ridges giving way to spruce bogs and cold-water salmon tributaries of the Matapédia system. The climb out of the Rivière Dunière valley onto the main plateau ridge is the defining stretch: a rocky, eroded climb with embedded shale ledges and off-camber corners where the road edge simply drops away into the bush. In wet conditions this slope is greasy enough to push a two-wheel-drive sideways without hesitation. The rewards at the top are sweeping views south toward New Brunswick and campsites on remote lake shores that see almost no pressure outside hunting season.
A high-clearance 4WD is the minimum — a locker on the rear axle is strongly recommended for the plateau descent on the northeast spur. Zec access fees apply at the entrance checkpoint on Route 132 corridor roads; confirm current fees with Sépaq or the managing Zec directly. Best season runs late June through early October. Amqui is your fuel and supply town — don’t leave without a full tank and a day’s worth of food buffer. Cell coverage is nonexistent past the first checkpoint. This is moose and black bear country at its most understated and rewarding.
