Chemin de la Rivière Natashquan — Basse-Côte-Nord Wilderness Road to Natashquan Village

The loneliest road on Quebec's North Shore.

Difficult

The road to Natashquan is not a road most Quebecers have driven, and that’s exactly the point. The village at the mouth of the Natashquan River — birthplace of Gilles Vigneault and home to the Innu community of Nutashkuan — only gained year-round road access in 1996 when the extension of Route 138 was finally completed. West of Natashquan, the forestry network along the river valley is raw Canadian Shield: boreal black spruce, exposed granite, river crossings over aging culverts, and sections that get genuinely gnarly after rainfall. The Rivière Natashquan itself is one of Quebec’s premier Atlantic salmon rivers, and the road follows it through some of the most untouched boreal corridor on the entire Côte-Nord. Plan a stop at the historic Pointe-Parent area and watch for woodland caribou throughout.

This is a remote route by any measure — fuel at Sept-Îles or Havre-Saint-Pierre before committing, because options are extremely limited. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory on the forestry spur roads off Route 138; the paved highway section is easy but the backcountry connectors are not. Best driven late June through September; spring breakup makes forestry roads impassable and fall hunting season brings heavy logging truck traffic. Cell service is essentially nonexistent past Havre-Saint-Pierre. Dispersed camping is possible on Crown land throughout the river corridor. This is legitimately remote Quebec — respect it accordingly.
