Yellowknife to Rae Lakes Winter Road — North Slave Backcountry Ice Route

Every winter, once the lakes and muskeg freeze hard enough, the Government of the NWT opens a network of ice roads north and northeast of Yellowknife that are the only vehicle access to communities like Wekweètì and the Rae Lakes region. This route pushes across open lake ice and through boreal spruce corridors on the Canadian Shield, connecting the capital to Tłı̨chǫ communities that spend the rest of the year accessible only by air. The ice is marked with spruce boughs and reflective stakes, but the surface conditions change daily — pressure ridges can lift overnight, and overflowing water hidden under snow is a constant threat. This is not a joy ride. Speed limits on NWT ice roads are strictly enforced — typically 70 km/h max and often lower near pressure cracks — and trucks leave windows cracked in case a vehicle breaks through and they need to exit fast. That’s not paranoia; it’s protocol. Best window is mid-January through mid-March when ice thickness is confirmed.
