Silver City Ruins — Kluane Lake Historic Townsite Viewpoint
Silver City sits on the south shore of Kluane Lake near the Alaska Highway, roughly 25 km east of Haines Junction. It was a supply town and police post that served copper miners working the Slims River country in the early 1900s — at its peak it had a hotel, trading post, and North-West Mounted Police detachment. Today a handful of weathered log structures remain standing in the spruce, visible from a short walk off the highway pullout. For anyone running the Dezadeash Lake backcountry or the Donjek Route, it’s a legitimate history anchor right on the approach road.
Access is directly off the Alaska Highway — look for the pullout at approximately Km 1706 of the Alaska Highway near the south end of Kluane Lake. No facilities, no formal trailhead signage — just park and walk. The structures are fragile; don’t pry or climb on them. Best visited in late summer when the brush is down and light is low. Kluane National Park and Reserve land — no permits required for a day visit.
