Dawson City — Yukon River Ferry Crossing and Town Welcome
The George Black Ferry is a free, government-operated cable ferry that hauls vehicles across the Yukon River between Dawson City and the start of the Top of the World Highway. It runs from roughly late May through October, weather and ice permitting. For anyone heading toward the Boundary Road, Fortymile Country, or connecting into Alaska, this crossing is the gateway. Dawson City itself is a legitimate resupply hub — fuel, groceries, hardware, and the legendary Bombay Peggy’s if you need a debrief.
Ferry hours are typically 9am–11pm daily in summer, but check the Yukon government site before you roll up expecting a midnight crossing. Ice breakup and freeze-up dates dictate the operational window — early or late season crossings are not guaranteed. Cell signal is reasonable in town. From here, the Top of the World Highway gravel starts immediately on the west bank.
