Pelly Banks Road — Pelly River South Fork to Yukon–BC Border Country

South Pelly wilderness — where the road just quits.

Difficult

The Pelly Banks area sits in the deep interior where the Pelly River bends south toward its headwaters near the BC boundary, and the rough track serving it is the definition of end-of-the-road. Accessed from the Robert Campbell Highway west of Watson Lake, this route follows the South Pelly River valley through open spruce-birch terrain, past old trading post remnants and First Nations heritage sites tied to the Kaska Dena Nation. The road fades progressively as you push south — cleared sections give way to two-track, two-track gives way to grown-over ATV trail. Watch for beaver-flooded sections that look solid until they aren’t.

A high-clearance 4WD handles the upper half in dry conditions; the lower sections toward the border demand lockers, good approach angles, and comfort with self-recovery in total isolation. Late June through August is your season — the road surface depends entirely on summer rainfall, so check conditions before committing. No services exist beyond Pelly Crossing to the north. Carry fuel for 400+ km of round-trip driving, a water filter, and realistic expectations about turnaround points. The draw is exactly what the road threatens you with: genuine wilderness travel in a part of the Yukon that sees almost no traffic.
