Boundary Road — Watson Lake to Upper Liard River Flats

BC–Yukon border boreal run to the upper Liard.

Moderate

Watson Lake sits at the southeast corner of Yukon, and the Boundary Road pushes south from town into a stretch of boreal terrain that straddles the Yukon–British Columbia border. The track runs through dense spruce forest along creek drainages feeding the upper Liard River, crossing several unnamed streams before opening onto the river flats where the Liard runs wide and braided. This is moose and wolf country — tracks in the mud are more common than tire ruts. The road was originally cut to support trappers and early resource exploration, and sections of old corduroy still surface through low-lying muskeg crossings that demand momentum and commitment.

Moderate to Difficult depending on the season. A capable high-clearance 4WD will handle this in dry conditions; add any rainfall and those muskeg crossings become Expert-level quickly. The nearest fuel is Watson Lake — fill up and carry a spare 20 litres minimum. No services of any kind exist along the route. Late June through mid-September is the practical window; spring breakup makes the low sections impassable. The payoff is honest northern solitude, good moose habitat, decent fishing in the Liard tributaries, and a backdoor feel that the Alaska Highway crowd never finds. Have a dirty day.
