Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Kakwa River to Sulphur Gates (Alberta)
Sulphur canyon, big mountains, horse country.
Pull north out of Grande Cache on Hwy 734 and within an hour the cutblocks thin out and the mountains close in. This stretch follows the Smoky River drainage to Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area, where the river punches through a tight limestone canyon and the air carries a genuine sulphur bite from natural gas seeps in the cliff walls — you’ll smell it before you see it. The road is straightforward gravel for most of its length but the last few kilometres to the Sulphur Gates parking area drop into river-bottom terrain with soft shoulders and seasonal drainage crossings. Watch for the Kakwa River ford junction north of town; in high water it’s not passable without significant ground clearance and a snorkel. This is outfitter country — you will share the road with horse trailers and hunting camp supply rigs.
Rated Moderate, trending toward Difficult at the Kakwa ford in June. A capable high-clearance 4WD handles this fine in summer; a stock SUV will struggle at the crossing. Best season is late July through early October before first snow closes the northern cutlines. Fuel in Grande Cache — it’s the last stop for a long way. No permits needed for the road itself; Sulphur Gates PRA has a day-use area. Cell service drops to zero north of Grande Cache. Dispersed camping is available on Crown land along the corridor; this is some of the most underappreciated backcountry camping in Alberta.
