Kananaskis — Elk Lakes Connector via Fording River Pass Road (Alberta)

Rocky alpine pass on the Alberta–BC divide.

Difficult

Starting from the upper Kananaskis Lakes trailhead area in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, this route follows the Elk Pass access track as it climbs through dense spruce timber and opens onto the broad subalpine meadows near the provincial boundary. The road is rocky and eroded in sections, with embedded limestone and drainage bars that test approach angles on anything running a stock bumper. The pass itself sits just above treeline — larches turning gold in late September, snow patches lingering into July — and the descent toward the Elk Lakes side drops into British Columbia’s Elk Lakes Provincial Park through a series of steep switchbacks that demand both low-range confidence and good brakes. It’s a genuine cross-border alpine drive that rewards the prepared.

This is a difficult trail — 4WD with lockers is strongly recommended, and a lift of at least two inches helps on the rockier descent sections. No trailers. The road is closed seasonally; typically open mid-June through October depending on snowpack. A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for all vehicles in the Peter Lougheed zone — buy it before you arrive. No fuel after Kananaskis Village. Cell service is nonexistent at the pass. The Elk Lakes campground on the BC side provides a legitimate overnight base for those running a two-day loop back through Coleman via Highway 43.
