Skookumchuck Creek FSR to Whitecap Alpine — East Kootenay
Shale, exposure, and the Trench laid bare.
The Skookumchuck Creek FSR spiders out of the Skookumchuck area northeast of Cranbrook, pushing up through secondary-growth timber into the exposed flanks of the Rockies. This corridor served early coal prospectors working the seams above the Kootenay River valley, and rusted equipment still surfaces in cutbanks after hard rains. The upper spur to the Whitecap alpine zone is the real objective — a steep, loose-shale climb that gains serious elevation fast and pops you out into a boulder-strewn basin where the Rocky Mountain Trench stretches north and south as far as you can see. It’s a perspective that genuinely stops you in your tracks.
Expect sidehill shelf road, off-camber corners with exposure, and shale that rolls underfoot like ball bearings. Lockers are strongly recommended on the upper third — a good set of all-terrain tires alone won’t cut it when the road is wet. Window is tight: mid-July through early October before early snow closes the upper road. No permits, no fees. Nearest fuel is Skookumchuck or Cranbrook — top off before you leave. The basin itself has no water source you’d want to trust without filtration, so tank up below. Zero cell coverage from the junction onward.
