Kuskanax Creek FSR to McDonald Creek Summit — Upper Arrow Lake
Selkirk switchbacks with consequence.
Nakusp sits on the shore of Upper Arrow Lake in the Selkirk Mountains, and most people passing through grab a soak at the hot springs and keep moving. The ones who know better turn up the Kuskanax Creek FSR and start climbing. The road rises aggressively from the valley floor, passing through second-growth cedar and hemlock before breaking into old burns and subalpine terrain near the McDonald Creek drainage. The upper section narrows to single-lane with loose rock surface, erosion cuts, and switchbacks tight enough to require multiple-point turns for longer rigs. The summit ridge delivers 360-degree views of the Selkirks and Monashees that genuinely earn the drive up.
This is expert territory for anything over about 200 inches of wheelbase — a compact or mid-size 4WD is significantly more manageable on the upper switchbacks. Lockers are useful, not mandatory. The road typically opens late June depending on snowpack and closes hard by mid-October. Fuel in Nakusp. No permit needed, limited dispersed camping on the upper benches. Cell is gone past the first couple of kilometres. The descent demands low-range, cool brakes, and patience — don’t rush it. This one separates the drivers who know what they’re doing from the ones who thought it looked easy on a map.
