Sunshine Valley Forest Service Road

The Sunshine Valley FSR cuts a brutal path through some of the Coast Mountains’ most unforgiving terrain, following old mining roads from the 1930s that were never meant for pleasure driving. Starting from the Similkameen River valley near Princeton, the route climbs through a series of switchbacks that’ll test your rig’s cooling system before dropping into the remote Sunshine Creek drainage where abandoned mine shafts dot the hillsides. The real challenge comes at Sunshine Creek itself — a rock-strewn crossing that’s claimed more oil pans than prospectors’ dreams, followed by a technical climb over loose shale that demands precise throttle control and spotting.

This is expert-level territory requiring full skid plates, rock sliders, and at least 33-inch tires with aggressive tread. Best tackled in dry conditions from July through September when creek levels drop, though even then you’ll want recovery gear and shouldn’t attempt it solo. No cell service once you leave the Similkameen valley, and the nearest fuel is back in Princeton. What you get is authentic backcountry solitude, killer views of the Cascade peaks, and the satisfaction of running a route that separates weekend warriors from serious wheelers.
