Camp Bird Mine and Road

Historic gold mine accessible via rugged 4WD road above Ouray, offering dramatic San Juan Mountain views and mining history.

Camp Bird Mine sits at 11,000 feet above Ouray, reached by a challenging 4WD road that climbs through aspen groves and alpine terrain. The historic gold mine operated from 1896 to 1990, producing over $25 million in gold. Remnants of mining structures, tailings, and equipment scattered across the site tell the story of Colorado’s mining boom. Views stretch across Imogene Basin toward Telluride.

The access road is steep, narrow, and requires high-clearance 4WD with good tires — expect loose rock, tight switchbacks, and exposure. Open roughly June through October depending on snow. No camping at the mine itself, but several dispersed spots exist along the lower portions of the road. Popular day trip for those running Imogene Pass or exploring the San Juan backcountry.
