Callaghan Valley Olympic Legacy Road

Olympic legacy road to Coast Range alpine lakes

Expert

This challenging FSR climbs from the Cheakamus Valley into the rugged Callaghan Range, following the infrastructure left behind from Whistler’s 2010 Winter Olympics Nordic skiing venues. The 28-kilometer route starts deceptively easy on maintained gravel before turning into a serious 4×4 technical challenge above the old Olympic facilities, with steep rock ledges, loose talus sections, and creek crossings that have claimed more than a few oil pans. The road punches through dense coastal forest before breaking into alpine territory around Alexander Falls, where the real climbing begins toward Callaghan Lake and the stunning peaks of the Coast Range.

This is expert-level terrain that demands proper 4WD with skid plates, good tires, and recovery gear. Summer only – snow blocks access from October to June, and even then the upper sections often don’t clear until July. Weather changes fast in this alpine environment, so check conditions before heading up. The road dead-ends at several pristine alpine lakes perfect for backcountry camping, with world-class fishing for cutthroat trout and some of the most dramatic Coast Range scenery you’ll find within striking distance of Vancouver.
