Culebra Naval Ammunition Depot Access Roads

WWII bunkers and secret beaches on forgotten island

Moderate

These forgotten military access roads crisscross the eastern end of Culebra, connecting the scattered remains of the U.S. Navy’s former ammunition storage facility. Built during WWII and used through the 1970s for target practice, the concrete bunkers and observation posts now sit empty among the scrub forest. The main route follows the old perimeter road from Dewey to Playa Brava, with spurs leading to hilltop observation bunkers that offer commanding views of the Culebra Sound and nearby cays.

Moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though some technical sections around bunker sites require careful line choice through loose coral rock. Dry season (January-May) provides best conditions when seasonal streams are passable. No permits needed for the roads themselves, but respect private property boundaries. The route connects several primitive camping areas near secluded beaches, making it ideal for multi-day exploration of one of Puerto Rico’s most remote islands.
