Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge Management Road 7

Deep sand track through pristine longleaf habitat.

Moderate

Management Road 7 penetrates deep into the Carolina Sandhills’ most pristine longleaf pine ecosystem, where red-cockaded woodpeckers nest in centuries-old trees and wild turkeys scratch through wire grass understory. This 8-mile sand track connects multiple wildlife management ponds while crossing some of the deepest sugar sand in the refuge. The route passes through prescribed burn areas that showcase the natural fire cycle essential to longleaf pine survival, with Martins Lake serving as the turnaround point for most vehicles.

Easy to moderate difficulty for properly equipped vehicles, but the deep sand sections will humble stock SUVs and street tires. High-clearance recommended, though aggressive tread patterns matter more than ground clearance here. Airing down to 15-18 PSI makes the difference between progress and embarrassment. Open during hunting seasons with restrictions—check refuge regulations. No camping allowed, but nearby Cheraw State Park provides facilities. This is pure Sandhills ecology at its finest, offering wildlife photography opportunities that few visitors ever see.
