Monte Jayuya Radio Tower Technical Ascent

Vertical coffee plantation climb to island's second peak.

Expert

The grinding climb up Monte Jayuya’s eastern face follows a maintenance road carved into near-vertical coffee plantation terraces, with switchbacks so tight that most vehicles need three-point turns. Originally bulldozed in 1978 to service the peak’s communications array, this route punishes both drivers and machinery with sustained 25-degree grades and loose volcanic soil that turns to grease when wet. The infamous “Radio Tower Switchback” at 3,800 feet has claimed more differentials than any other single obstacle in Puerto Rico’s mountains — a sharp right-hand hairpin with a boulder field on the inside and a 500-foot drop on the outside.

This is expert-level terrain requiring low-range gearing, aggressive tread, and steel nerves. Modified 4x4s only — stock vehicles will overheat or lose traction on the sustained climbs. Absolutely avoid during rainy season when the volcanic clay becomes impassable. Dry season only (January-March), and even then, recovery gear is mandatory. The payoff is standing at 4,314 feet above sea level with panoramic views from the Atlantic to the Caribbean, plus bragging rights for conquering Puerto Rico’s most technically demanding mountain ascent. Camping prohibited near the radio installations.
