Big Woods Lake Recreational Area Primitive Trails

Muddy tracks through Indiana's last old-growth forest

Moderate

Big Woods Lake sits in the heart of 1,200 acres of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest — some of Indiana’s last virgin timber. The primitive trail system follows old logging roads from the 1800s and newer management tracks through seasonal wetlands and creek bottoms that flood regularly. Beech Ridge Trail challenges drivers with deep mud wallows and water crossings that can rise knee-deep during spring melt, while the perimeter road stays drier but still demands careful line choice through the root-choked forest floor.

This is moderate terrain requiring aggressive tread and good ground clearance — stock vehicles will struggle in the seasonal mud. Best tackled during dry summer months or after freeze-up in winter. No permits required but respect the old-growth ecosystem and stay on designated routes. You’ll find primitive camping near the lake and some of the most impressive hardwood forest left in the Midwest, plus decent bass fishing when you need a break from wrestling your rig through the mud.
