Maine’s Katahdin Iron Works Loop
Mining history meets Maine wilderness
The Katahdin Iron Works Loop traces the old supply roads that once fed one of Maine’s most ambitious industrial ventures. Starting from the ghost town of Katahdin Iron Works, the route follows logging roads and mining tracks through the 100-Mile Wilderness region. The real test comes at Silver Stream around mile 12 — this crossing has claimed more than a few rigs when spring runoff turns it into a torrent.
Difficult rating due to technical water crossings, soft bog sections, and remote location with zero cell service. You need serious 4WD capability, recovery gear, and self-sufficiency for at least two days. Best tackled August through October when water levels drop. The payoff includes exploring actual 1800s blast furnace ruins and camping beside pristine wilderness lakes. Bring bug spray — the mosquitoes are legendary even by Maine standards.
