Baja California Central Desert Traverse
Volcanic spine crossing through Baja's remote heart
The Central Desert cuts straight through Baja California’s volcanic spine, connecting the Pacific fog zone near El Rosario with the Sea of Cortez at Bahía de los Ángeles. This 200-mile traverse follows a network of mining roads and ranch tracks through landscapes that shift from granite boulder fields to flat desert pavement, passing abandoned sulfur mines at Santa Rosalía and the eerie ghost camp at Pozo Alemán. The route demands careful navigation through unmarked intersections and includes the notorious Arroyo Grande wash crossing — a miles-long sand trap that’s claimed more than a few overconfident drivers.
Rated difficult due to soft sand sections, remote exposure, and minimal cell coverage for 150+ miles. High-clearance 4WD with good approach/departure angles essential, plus sand mats, recovery gear, and at least three days of water and fuel. Best tackled April through October when temperatures stay below furnace levels. The payoff is pure Baja solitude — cardón cactus forests, ancient Indigenous rock art sites, and some of the darkest night skies on the continent. This is the desert crossing that separates weekend warriors from serious overlanders.
