Adirondack Park Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Truck Trail
Wilderness truck trail to pristine Adirondack backcountry
This old logging road turned wilderness maintenance track penetrates deep into the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness, following Putnam Creek through a landscape that hasn’t changed much since the 1800s. The 12-mile route starts deceptively easy near Crane Pond Road, but the real test comes at Mill Brook Ford—a rocky crossing that can run knee-deep during spring melt. Beyond that, the track climbs through a technical boulder garden where glacial erratics the size of pickup trucks force careful line selection.
You’ll need serious 4WD capability and rock sliders for the roughest sections, plus recovery gear since cell service is nonexistent and help is far away. Best months are July through September when water levels drop, though even then expect muddy spots that’ll cake your undercarriage. No permits required but respect the wilderness boundary markers—beyond them it’s foot traffic only. The payoff is pristine backcountry camping at designated sites near Pharaoh Lake, surrounded by the kind of Adirondack wilderness that inspired the Forever Wild concept.
