Machete Ridge

Arizona's most technical challenge

Extreme

Machete Ridge earned its name honestly — this razor-thin spine of rock northwest of Phoenix cuts through the desert like a giant blade, offering some of the most technical driving in the Southwest. The notorious “Notch” section forces drivers to thread their vehicles through a gap barely wider than a truck, with thousand-foot drops on both sides. One local shop owner jokes that he’s rebuilt more axles from Machete Ridge casualties than all other Arizona trails combined.

This is expert-only territory that demands serious preparation. You’ll need a heavily modified rig with rock sliders, skid plates, and probably a few spare driveshafts. Winter months offer the best conditions — summer heat makes this already punishing trail downright dangerous. No permits required, but bring recovery gear and a spotter who’s run this ridge before. What you get for the risk is ultimate bragging rights and technical skills that’ll serve you anywhere. Most importantly, you’ll know exactly what your rig — and your nerve — can handle.
