Ottawa National Forest Sturgeon River Gorge Dispersed Area
The Sturgeon River cuts a deep gorge through ancient rock, creating one of Michigan’s most spectacular backcountry settings. Dispersed sites sit in mixed hardwood forest above the gorge rim, offering filtered views of the river valley. Sites accommodate medium-sized rigs with room for several tents. Fall colors here rival anything in New England.
Two-track access requires high clearance and gets muddy during spring breakup and fall rains. River trail down to the gorge starts from the camping area. Peak season runs September-October for colors, but mosquitoes can be brutal June-August. Winter access by snowmobile only.
