Monongahela National Forest Spruce Knob Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

Dispersed camping opportunities along Forest Service roads approaching Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s highest point at 4,863 feet. Sites scattered through dense spruce and hardwood forest offer cool temperatures even in summer. Popular spots include clearings along Forest Road 112 and side roads branching toward the observation tower. Most sites accommodate 2-4 vehicles with natural fire rings already established. Vault toilet at Spruce Knob Lake Recreation Area nearby.

Forest Service roads are gravel and dirt, suitable for any vehicle in dry conditions but can become muddy and slippery when wet. Snow possible October through April at this elevation. No potable water sources — bring your own or treat water from mountain streams. Cell service spotty to nonexistent throughout the area.
