Custer State Park Iron Mountain Technical Route

Expert granite climbing to fire tower views

Expert

This technical route branches off the main Iron Mountain Road inside Custer State Park, following old logging roads and mining tracks up exposed granite faces that’ll test your line choice and differential locks. The trail includes two notorious sections: Devil’s Elbow, a hairpin turn around a granite outcrop with zero margin for error, and the final push to the fire tower that climbs 800 feet in half a mile over loose rock and exposed ledges. Historic Civilian Conservation Corps stonework marks several sections where crews built retaining walls by hand in the 1930s.

This is expert-level terrain demanding lockers, skid plates, and spotters for the technical sections. Summer crowds make weekday runs essential, and afternoon thunderstorms can make granite slabs deadly slick. Park entry fees apply, but camping at nearby Legion Lake gives you early morning access when lighting is best. The reward is 360-degree views from the fire tower across the entire Black Hills, with Mount Rushmore visible on clear days. Not for the faint of heart, but unforgettable for those who earn it.
