Strawberry Mountain Fire Lookout Road
Active fire tower with panoramic Idaho views
Strawberry Mountain Fire Lookout Road winds 12 miles from the South Fork Payette River to one of Idaho’s last staffed fire towers, climbing through dense lodgepole pine and opening into alpine meadows dotted with granite outcrops. The road follows an old CCC-built route from the 1930s, with stone culverts and retaining walls still holding strong after 90 years. The final two miles get steep and loose, but the payoff is worth it—the active lookout tower sits at 8,196 feet with views from the Sawtooths to the Seven Devils Mountains, and the fire spotter usually welcomes respectful visitors.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the upper sections, though stock vehicles can make it in dry conditions with careful driving. The road is typically open July through October, but snow can linger on the north-facing slopes well into summer. No permits required, just common sense around the working fire tower. Dispersed camping is allowed below treeline, with excellent spots near Hidden Lake about halfway up. Bring water—the only reliable source is the lake, and cell service doesn’t exist until you’re practically at the tower.
