Sierra Madre Range Road

Wyoming's forgotten mountain spine

Difficult

The Sierra Madre mountains rise like a forgotten wall along Wyoming’s southern border, and this demanding route follows old logging and mining roads across the spine of the range from near Encampment to the Colorado border. Built to access copper mines and timber operations in the early 1900s, the road climbs through aspen groves and over Battle Pass before descending technical switchbacks into remote valleys. Several creek crossings and rocky technical sections test both vehicle and driver, especially around the historic mining camps.

Difficult route requiring modified 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. The middle section features loose rock, off-camber turns, and seasonal water crossings that can be treacherous. Best tackled July through September when high-elevation snow melts. No permits needed but check seasonal closures. Limited cell service throughout. Excellent dispersed camping opportunities near old mine sites. This is true backcountry where self-reliance isn’t optional—you might not see another soul for days.
