Tankwa Karoo Moon Valley Circuit

Where Mars meets the Karoo and fossils tell stories

Moderate

Twisted shale formations and petrified mud lakes create an otherworldly moonscape along this 85-kilometer circuit through the Tankwa Karoo, where NASA genuinely studies terrain that mirrors Mars. The route loops from Ouberg Pass through Moon Valley’s fossilized riverbed, past the ‘Alien Landscape’ formations near Verlatenkloof, and returns via the Roggeveld Escarpment with its 300-million-year-old rock strata. Sharp shale edges and hidden washouts demand constant vigilance, while flash flood channels cut across the track without warning near the old Gansfontein ruins.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for rocky sections and diff lock capability for loose climbs up fossil-rich ridges. Sharp rocks destroy standard tires—carry two spares minimum and tire repair kit. Best tackled April-September when temperatures stay below 35°C and afternoon thunderstorms are rare. No water sources exist along the entire route; carry 10+ liters per person. The payoff is hiking through 250-million-year-old sea bed fossils and camping under Africa’s clearest night skies, where light pollution doesn’t exist for 200 kilometers in any direction.
