Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Backcountry Loop
Wild horse country and homestead ruins in high desert refuge
This remote loop explores the heart of Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, following old ranch roads through vast sagebrush valleys and volcanic rimrock country. The route connects the abandoned Dufurrena Ponds area with historic Virgin Creek and the old CCC camp, passing weathered homestead ruins and spring-fed oases where wild horses gather. The track to Big Spring Canyon requires navigating rocky draws and crossing seasonal washes, while the rim drive offers panoramic views across the Black Rock Desert to the distant Sierra Nevada.
Easy to moderate driving on mostly graded dirt roads, though some sections become rough and rutted after storms. Any high-clearance vehicle can handle dry conditions, but 4WD recommended for wet weather and spring runoff. Open year-round but best from late spring through fall—winter brings snow and mud. No permits required for day use. Bring plenty of water and fuel; nearest services are in Cedarville, California or Denio, Nevada. Outstanding wildlife viewing and photography opportunities, with excellent dispersed camping throughout the refuge away from water sources.
