Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop

Vegas' backyard red rock playground

Easy

The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop delivers instant desert gratification just 20 minutes from the Vegas Strip, winding 13 miles through some of Nevada’s most striking geology. The main route follows a well-maintained paved road past towering Aztec sandstone formations that glow crimson at sunrise and sunset, but the real adventure begins on the unmarked 4WD spurs that branch into Pine Creek Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, and the technical challenge of Ice Box Canyon. These side routes require careful navigation through loose boulder fields and seasonal water crossings.

While the paved loop accommodates any vehicle, the technical spurs demand high-clearance 4WD and solid rock-crawling skills, especially in Ice Box Canyon where truck-sized boulders create natural obstacles. Open year-round, though summer temperatures can exceed 115°F, making dawn and dusk the prime windows. Day-use permits are required and the loop closes at sunset — no overnight camping allowed within the conservation area. Despite the crowds on weekends, the technical routes offer solitude and some of the Southwest’s most photogenic red rock country.
