Elephant Butte to Castle Hot Springs Road
Desert traverse to historic hot springs resort
This remote desert traverse connects the distinctive volcanic dome of Elephant Butte with the ruins of Castle Hot Springs Resort through 30 miles of pristine Sonoran Desert. The route navigates multiple sandy washes, rocky climbs, and saguaro forests while passing ancient Native American sites and remnants of the luxury resort that hosted Hollywood stars in the early 1900s. Elephant Butte itself offers a challenging but rewarding scramble for panoramic desert views.
Rated moderate to difficult due to deep sand sections and rocky technical climbs that demand 4WD with good ground clearance and aired-down tires for sand. Best traveled November through March when temperatures are reasonable and desert blooms are possible. No permits needed but bring recovery gear for sand extractions and plenty of water. The payoff includes soaking in natural hot springs, primitive camping among giant saguaros, and experiencing some of Arizona’s most remote and beautiful desert terrain.
