Sierra de Aconquija Cloud Forest Mining Circuit

Cloud forest mining circuit with river crossings

Difficult

The Aconquija mining circuit climbs from sugar cane fields at 400 meters to cloud forest at 2,800 meters, following pack mule trails widened during the tungsten boom of the 1940s. The route passes through multiple climate zones: subtropical montane forest gives way to elfin woodland draped in epiphytes, then emerges onto windswept páramo where the abandoned Mina La Alumbrera processing plant still stands. River crossings increase in difficulty with elevation as runoff from perpetual cloud condensation feeds rushing tributaries.

This is technical mountain driving requiring 4WD low range, underbody protection, and recovery gear. Fog can drop visibility to meters, while afternoon thunderstorms turn creek crossings into torrents within minutes. Plan three days minimum and carry camping gear – there are no services above El Mollar. Best tackled during dry season (May-October) when river levels are manageable. The payoff is solitude in Argentina’s most biodiverse mountain range, where spectacled bears still roam and ancient mining camps tell stories of fortunes won and lost.
