Gallitzin State Forest Mushannon Creek Technical Loop
Technical mining heritage through reclaimed strip mines
The Mushannon Creek Technical Loop follows old coal haul roads through Gallitzin State Forest’s most rugged terrain, where strip mines from the 1960s created a moonscape of rocky benches and deep cuts that nature is slowly reclaiming. The route climbs from Mushannon Creek up through a series of technical rock gardens left by dragline operations, past the ruins of the old Brisbin Mine tipple, where you’ll need to pick your line carefully through loose shale and coal waste that can shift under your tires.
This is expert-level terrain demanding full skid plates, aggressive tires, and spotting experience — the loose coal spoil can catch even experienced drivers off guard. Summer and fall offer the best conditions when creek levels drop, though you’ll need permits for camping and the route is off-limits during hunting season. What you get is a piece of Pennsylvania mining history that few people see, plus some surprisingly good wildlife viewing as the forest reclaims these industrial scars.
